75425 - Straw Angels of Poland: A Hands‑On Ornament Workshop

75425 - Straw Angels of Poland: A Hands‑On Ornament Workshop
Instructor: Aleksandra Ward

In this hands-on class, you will discover the beauty and cultural richness of straw art. Together, we’ll explore a beloved ornament found across Poland and Ukraine, crafted from simple natural straw yet full of meaning and artistry.

You’ll learn traditional techniques for cutting and assembling natural straw into balanced forms, inspired by the instructions passed down by instructor Aleksandra’s Polish grandmother. We’ll discuss the symbolism of straw in Slavic cultures and the role of ornamental mobiles in seasonal rituals.

Each participant will make one, or more if time allows it, small aniołek, a Polish angel ornament, with optional embellishments. You will leave with your finished pieces, the skills to continue creating at home, and a deeper appreciation for the timeless artistry woven into these cultural traditions.

Instructor will provide all materials for making the ornaments and printed instructions with a powerpoint presentation.

Students are asked to bring:

• sharp craft scissors
• measuring tape or ruler
• note-taking tools (if you’d like to take notes)
