–The White Bear Center for the Arts (WBCA) is offering fun and educational adult summer art classes in April & May including, painting, drawing, clay, mosaics, jewelry and more. All Art Center instructors are experienced professionals in the field they are teaching. Classes are discounted for WBCA members. Printmaking with Sue Kapsner
April 14, 10AM-12 Noon
Age/Level: Adults, Youth 8+, Beginners and Beyond
Tuition: $16 Member/ $20 Non-Member ($5 material fee payable to instructor)
Location: White Bear Center for the Arts
Printmaking is a time honored art form with practical applications, such as card making. Students learn how to reproduce drawings with 3 printmaking techniques that don’t require a printing press.

Tuesday Clay Studio with Sally Brown
Tuesdays, April 17 & 24, 9:00-11:00 AM

This class starts with demonstrations of bowls, plates, mugs, vases, etc., alternating thrown pieces with handbuilding and glazing techniques and/or requests. From beginner to advanced, students will work on increasing their skills. At 11, Open Studio begins and everyone will have time to work on their own pottery projects.

Lampworking with Jennifer Wolcott
3 Sundays, April 15-29, 12:00-3:00 PM
Age/Level: Adults, Teens, Beginner and Beyond
Tuition: $85 Member/$100 Non-Member
Material fee: $30 torch kit rental and $25 material fee.
Location: White Bear Center for the Arts
Students learn how to safely work glass rods into beautiful beads using a small torch.

Multimedia Drawing with Mary Pearson
6 Mondays, April 16-30, May 7-21, 7-9PM
Age/Level: Adults, Teens, Beginners and Beyond
Tuition: $96 Member/$120 Non-Member
Location: White Bear Center for the Arts
Students will learn color temperatures, composition, texture, creating color combinations and basic drawing instruction. Subjects will include: still lifes and photo references. They will learn how to use a photo as a guide to creating their own unique style of art. Paint in pastels, colored pencils or pen and ink.

Hardcover Pop Up Book with Lin Lacy
April 21, 10AM-12 Noon
Age/Level: Adults, Beginners and Beyond

Material Fee: $18 payable to instructor

Learn about paper grain and how to cover book board and miter corners. Make a four section accordion insert with pop ups in the middle two sections.

Friday Night Tie Dye with Sue Rutford

Parent/Child: $35 Member/$45 Non-Member

This is an opportunity to create wild & wonderful designs. Bring up to five items (T-shirt, pair of socks, pants, etc) to dye. Items need to be pre-washed 100% cotton. Wear old clothes, shoes and bring rubber gloves.

Writing a Fantasy Novel with J. Michael Blumer
5 Tuesdays, May 1-29, 6:30-8:30 PM
Age/Level: Teens, Adults

Have you thought of writing your own Young Adult fantasy novel but aren't sure how to start? Maybe you're working on one but feel a bit discouraged. This five part workshop will guide you through the process of writing, with topics including plot, setting, characterization, hooks, editing, and selling your work to publishers. For a limited time after the workshop, Mike will be available for students to personally share what they have written or plan to write.

Tuesday Evening Clay with Sue Kapsner
4 Tuesdays, May 1-22, 7-9 PM
Age/Level: Age 11 and up, All levels
Tuition: $80 WBCA Member/$100 Non Member
Location: White Bear Center for the Arts
Learn a variety of techniques to work with clay, including handbuilding and wheel work. In this informal class students can work at their own pace. Techniques for surface treatment and glazing will be covered. This class is limited to 8 students per session so individual attention is guaranteed. A material fee for clay, glazes and firing is included in the weekly fee.

Developing Artistic Vision With Photography with Linda Lee
2 Wednesdays, May 2 & 9, 3:30-6:30 PM
Age/Level: Adults, Beginners to Advanced
Tuition: $50 WBCA Member/$65 Non-Member
Location: White Bear Center for the Arts
Developing artistic vision trains the eye to help take better photographs while learning to appreciate the beauty in the world around you. In the first session, the student will explore the qualities of images that move and inspire us artistically.We will discuss photographic technique and a critiquing process designed to help you develop visual and artistic discernment. This is a fun & educational group process! Students will need a camera for this class and need to know how to use it. This is not a class concerning the technical use of your equipment.

Nature Printing with Printmaking Techniques with Sue Filbin

Students will use a soft-rubber brayer and printmaking inks to create multiple prints with many pleasing effects.

Nature Printing with Watercolor Techniques with Sue Filbin

Students will use inexpensive pan watercolors and a brush to create prints that range from refined and detailed to fluid and ethereal.

Nature Printing with Oil-based Media with Sue Filbin

Students will use oil paints and oil-based printmaking inks applied with a dauber to capture great detail and create subtle color variations on long-lasting prints.

Students will mingle media and methods learned in classes 1, 2, and/or 3 to explore special effects, make monoprints, and decorate a paper petal portfolio.

Silver and Gold for Mother’s Day-Keum Boo with Kim Bakken-Parr

Tuition: $48 Member/$60 Non-member
Material Fee: $45 payable to the instructor
Location: White Bear Center for the Arts
Keum-Boo is known as the ancient Korean art of fusing gold foil to silver. Students will design an original piece of Precious Metal Clay jewelry. The metal clay is heated on an electric burner, and then foil is burnished to the surface of the metal clay piece until it fuses with the silver. This is an affordable way of incorporating gold into your jewelry pieces.

Watercolor-Glazing Portraits: A Time Tested Method with Heidi Nelson
Monday & Wednesday, May 7 & 9, 12:30-2:45PM
Age/Level: Adults, Intermediate, Advanced
Tuition: $36 Member/$45 Non-Member
Location: White Bear Center for the Arts
An in-depth study of realistic portraits using an updated version of the old masters technique of glazing developed by professional portrait artist Heidi Nelson. This class explores glazing, a method of using layers of bright and complimentary colors, to create portraits that glow with life. Focusing on the face we will study eyes, nose and lips separately then move on to a full face portrait.

Advanced Tie Dye with Sue Rutford
Friday, May 11, 7-9 PM
Age/Level: 8 and up, Prerequisite Tie Dye class
Tuition: $25 Member/$30 Non-Member
Parent/Child: $35 Member/$45 Non-Member
Location: White Bear Center for the Arts
Advanced techniques include stitching, fancy folds, dishpan dyeing, banding, and more. Again, bring 100% cotton, rayon, silk items or fabric, rubber gloves, and a dishpan. Remember to wear old clothes.

Book Making Workshop with Sue Rutford
Saturday, May 19, 1-3 PM
Age/Level: Ages 9 and up
Tuition: $22 Member/$26 Non-Member
Location: White Bear Center for the Arts
It’s so easy and lots of fun to create small books to keep or share. In this class students learn how to make bound books with pockets. This more traditional style of book binding allows you to create perfect little books with accordion folded pocket pages to store your paper treasures and photos.

Small Baskets with Cynthia Stuck
Saturday, May 19, 9:30-12:30 PM
Age/Level: Adults and Children but under 8 with a parent to help
Tuition: $26 Member/$30 Non-Member
Location: Tamarack Nature Center
Make a small basket with colored and natural reed on a wood base to keep pens, pencils, paper clips, combs, or whatever they like in it.

Beginning Natural Light Photographic Portraiture with Linda Lee
Sunday, May 20, 1:30-4:30 PM
Age/Level: Adults, Beginners and Advanced Beginners
Tuition: $28 WBCA Member/$35 Non-Member
Location: White Bear Center for the Arts
Whether the students ambitions are that of a hobbyist or if they’re considering professional portraiture, this is a great beginning class. Very Important: You will need a camera for this class and you will need to know how to use it. This is not a class on technical instruction concerning the use of your equipment.

Spirited Watercolors with Jeanne Larson
Friday & Saturday, May 25 & 26, 9:30AM-4PM
Age/Level: Adults
Tuition: $150 Member/$180 Non-Member
Location: Tamarack Nature Center
Learn to combine different aquamedia including traditional watercolor, gouache, fluid acrylics, caran d'ache and even the new luminescent watercolors and acrylics. This class demonstrates the principles and differences between painting on paper, watermedia paintings on canvas, and Ampersand board. Students will discover exciting new ways to employ layering and glazing processes to increase depth and vitality in their paintings. This class teaches endless ways to express personal vision whether painting realistically or abstractly. There will be daily demonstrations and a “try before you buy” supply table.
