Nationally recognized New York artist Eric Serritella Offers “Opened Earth” pottery workshop
February 2, 3, 4 at White Bear Center for the Arts

1/5/07
White Bear Lake, Minn. - Opened Earth pieces have been exhibited nationally and have appeared in Ceramics Monthly, Pottery Making Illustrated (cover), Clay Times and Ceramic Art (Taiwan).

White Bear Center for the Arts (WBCA) is proud to host nationally recognized ceramic artist Eric Serritella featuring his Opened Earth clay techniques on February 2nd, 3rd and 4th at the WBCA studio classroom in the Armory building, downtown WBL. This intensive lecture/demonstration and hands-on workshop will focus on methods for creating Opened Earth pieces using slabs and the wheel. A special emphasis will be placed on Chinese wheel-throwing techniques and teapot aesthetics.

Mr. Serritella’s visit kicks off with “New York to Taiwan: A Journey in Clay,” a PowerPoint presentation exploring the influences from a five-month artist residency in Taiwan in 2004. “My intention in this new body of work is to characterize, share and celebrate the tactile range and beauty of clay,” says Serritella. The works feature wheel-thrown pottery and sculptural ceramics that have been heated, stretched and altered to show the inner beauty, texture and earthiness of clay. Stoneware and porcelain are used in combination with treatments including terra sigillata, glazes, oxides, and multiple firing methods. Teapots are a specialty, and are reflective of his time spent with world-renowned teapot master Ah Leon.

Registration must be made in advance.
