January Art Classes for Adults

–The White Bear Center for the Arts (WBCA) is offering fun and educational art classes in January 2007. All Art Center instructors are experienced professionals in the field they are teaching. Classes are discounted for WBCA members. Visit www.whitebeararts.org and click on “Classes” to see a full listing of youth and adult art classes. Classes scheduled for January 2007:

Creative Self-Promotion with Britt Aamodt. Saturday, January 6, 1-4 PM at the WBCA. You’re an artist/writer/musician/creative mind, and you’ve got this great exhibit/book/band/idea you want to share with the world. Unless you’re one of the lucky few who has a built in audience, you need to go out there and drum up some attention. We will focus on techniques to target an audience and get them interested in your work. Class time includes time to share problems and ideas and get feedback. Tuition: $25 Member/$36 Non-Member.

Small Poems for Beginners with John Caddy. Six Thursdays, January 18-February 22nd, 6:30-8:30 PM at Tamarack Nature Center. The class will encourage students to write a small poem every day. We will explore poems by poets such as Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot, Robert Bly, Issa, Basho, H.D., Amy Lowell. Joe Paddock and others. Writing exercises will be organized around three basic principles of poetry: Image, Figure, and Recurrence. Tuition: $125 Member/$150 Non-Member. $5.00 copying fee payable to instructor.

Writing a Young Adult Fantasy Novel with J. Michael Blumer. Session I: Sunday, January 21, 1:30-4:30 PM or Session II: Sunday, January 28, 1:30-4:30 PM at the WBCA. Have you thought of writing your own Young Adult fantasy novel but aren't sure how to start? Maybe you're working on one but feel a bit discouraged. This two part, three hour workshop, presented by J. Michael Blumer, will guide you through the process of writing, with topics including plot, setting, characterization, hooks, editing, and selling your work to publishers. Tuition: $25 Member/$35 Non-Member each session.

Love Your Letters: Introduction to Italic Calligraphy with Janah Breidenbach. Two Mondays, January 22 & 29, 1-3:30 PM at Tamarack Nature Center. Jazz up your envelopes, add flare to your scrapbooks, calligraphy your family tree. You can do so much with calligraphy. Bring a ruler and pencil and $5 payable to the instructor will cover the rest of the supplies. Janah Breidenbach has studied calligraphy for over 15 years with various professionals from the U.S. and England. Tuition: $40 Member/$50 Non-Member.

Beginning Watercolor with Mary Pearson. Five Wednesdays, January 3 –31, 7-9 PM at the WBCA. No experience required. Learn the basics for enjoying this popular medium and paint from a variety of still life subjects. Supply list will be given prior to first class. Tuition: $64 Member/$80 Non-Member.

Basic Watercolor Techniques for Beginners with Heidi Nelson. Six Mondays, January 8-February 26, 12:30-2:45 PM (No class January 15 or February 19) at the WBCA. This class focuses on mastering basic skills that can be used to build any painting. Each week will consist of technique demonstrations, practice and then an application painting. Students may use the instructor’s supplies for a fee of $5 or purchase their own for $20. Tuition: $96 Member/$120 Non-Member.

Intermediate Watercolor with Heidi Nelson. Six Wednesdays, January 10-February 14, 12:30-2:45 PM. Explore more advanced watercolor techniques based on facilitated observation, technique demonstration, and application painting. Lessons include wet-in-wet clouds, glazing glowing colors, oriental brush strokes accompanied by lots of good information on composition and color theory. Age/Level: Intermediate/Advanced Level. Tuition: $96/$120 Non-Member.

Oil/Acrylic Painting with Frank Zeller. Four Tuesdays, January 9-30, 9 AM-12 Noon at the Masonic Lodge. Oil painting for everyone! This class is offered to anyone from beginner to advanced. We will all start with the basics; color, shape and value. Special techniques of oil painting will be included as they come up in the painting process. Frank Zeller is an extraordinary artist and art educator. Tuition: $64 Member/$80 Non-Member.

The Perpetual Art Class: All Media, All the Time! with Susan Fryer Voigt. Monday, January 22, 9:30 AM-12 Noon at Tamarack Nature Center. This class incorporates painters of every level in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. You will learn more about color, line, perspective, values, composition, framing and marketing. All water-based media are welcome, or you may use pastels, water-soluble oils or regular oils with an odorless solvent. This class must be signed up for a week in advance. Tuition: $30 Member/$38.

Drawing Techniques with Mary Pearson. Four Mondays, January 8-29, 7-9 PM at the WBCA. Each week will have a new drawing subject. We will work from still lives, photos and a live model. We will concentrate on creating interesting compositions, using perspective, measuring techniques, how to best use photo references, and the importance of value. Tuition: $64 Member/ $80 Non-Member.

Adult Clay Studio with Sally Brown. Four Tuesdays, January 9-30, 10 AM-12 Noon, or Four Fridays, January 5-26, 12-2 PM at the WBCA. Work with the wheel and hand building. Whether you are a beginner or looking for some studio time, this class is for you. We will cover the basics of preparing work for firing and glazing. Sally Brown is certified in silver clay and can teach you how to add embellishments to your clay pieces. There is an extra charge for silver material and firing. Tuition: $80 Member/$100 Non-Member.

Tuesday Evening Clay with Sue Kapsner. Four Tuesdays. January 9-30, 7-9 PM
Tuition: $80 Member/$100 Non-Member at the WBCA. Learn a variety of techniques to work with clay, surface treatment and glazing, handbuilding and wheel work in this informal class. Students work at their own pace. This class is limited to 8 students per session so you are guaranteed to get individual attention. Tuition: $80 WBCA Member/$100 Non-Member.

Fused Glass Plate with Liz Marson. Thursday, January 11, 6-8 PM at the WBCA. Learn glass fusing and slumping techniques by creating your own plate. Glass cutting is not mandatory but helpful. This is a one of a kind piece of art that you can use. This beautiful plate will also be microwave and dishwasher safe. Tuition: $32Member /$40 Non-Member
Material fee: $15 payable to instructor.

Fused Glass with Liz Marson. Two Thursdays, January 25 & February 1, 6-8 PM at the WBCA. Learn how to cut, grind, and fuse glass for beautiful, unique jewelry. You will learn about different kinds of glass and how to integrate fused work into a beaded necklace. Includes materials for fused piece, but students should bring their own beads the 2nd week to finish the necklace. Tuition: $40 Member/$50 Non-Member. Material fee: $15 payable to instructor.

“Lampworking” Glass Open Studio with Jennifer Wolcott. Thursday, January 18, 7-9 PM at the WBCA. Buy or bring from projects you would like to work on with Jennifer available for guidance. You can bring your own equipment or rent. Tuition: Use your own equipment $30 Member/$40 Non-Member. Use equipment rental $40 Member/$50 Non-Member.

Keum-Boo on Silver. Saturday, January 20, 9:30 AM-12 Noon at the WBCA. Keum-Boo is the ancient Korean art of fusing gold foil to silver. Design and create an original piece of Precious Metal Clay jewelry. Once the piece is fired the Keum-Boo application begins. The metal clay is heated on an electric burner, and foil is burnished to the surface of the metal clay piece until it fuses with the silver. Tuition: $48 Member/$60 Nonmember. Material Fee: $45 payable to the instructor.

PMC Open Studio with Kim Bakken-Parr. Saturday, January 27, 9:30 AM-12 Noon and
Saturday, February 3, 9:30-11:30 AM at the WBCA. Bring your unused PMC, tools, and creativity! Here is an opportunity for you to spend time working on your own ideas in this incredible medium. Additional supplies will be available for purchase. Kim will bring extra tools to use and a kiln for firing. Firing only, is an option. Tuition: $40 Member/$48 Nonmember. Material Fee: $5 firing fee payable to the instructor.

Beginning Ballet with Jan Chamberlin. 8 Tuesdays, January 9-February 27, 8:30-9:30 PM at the White Bear Sports Center. Learn the basics of ballet while improving your balance, flexibility, and grace in a relaxed and fun manner. Taught in the Vaganava style, class will include barre, centre and traveling steps. Please wear tight fitting clothes you can easily move in; ballet slippers recommended but not necessary. Jan Chamberlin received a BFA in dance from Marymount Manhattan College. Age/Level: Adults, Teens, 14 and up. Tuition: $80 Member/$96 Non-Member.

Intermediate Adult Ballet with Jan Chamberlin. 13 Wednesdays, January 3-March 28, 7-8 PM at the White Bear Sports Center. This class is a continuation of the Beginning Adult Ballet class. Work with barre, centre, traveling steps and turns as you improve your techniques in a relaxed and fun manner. Jan has over 15 years teaching dance and choreography. Age/Level: Adults, Teens 16 and up. Tuition: $130 Member/$156 Non-Member

“And All That Jazz” with Jan Chamberlin. 13 Wednesdays, January 3-March 28, 8-9 PM at the White Bear Sports Center. Come and learn classic jazz dance techniques while moving to Broadway show tunes and classical jazz music. Each class consists of warm-up, isolations, traveling steps, and learning new choreography. Age/Level: Adults, Teens 16 and up. Tuition: $130 Member/$156 Non-Member.
