–The White Bear Center for the Arts (WBCA) offers fun and educational art classes throughout the year for adults, youth and children. The Winter 2006/2007 Class Catalog is now available by mail or online at www.whitebeararts.org. Sign up for an art class and create that unique, handmade holiday gift including; a watercolor painting (and how to frame it, too), a beautiful clay ornament, a colorful paper-mache or kiln fired clay bowl, or a stunning piece of fine silver jewelry.

All Art Center instructors are experienced professionals in the field they are teaching. Classes are discounted for WBCA members. Art classes scheduled for the month of December:

Clay Ornaments with instructor Sally Brown & Nancy Hilger
Make and decorate clay decoration and ornaments using cookie cutters, stamps, and colorful clay slips. Personalize your holidays and create future heirloom gifts. Saturday, December 2, 10 AM-12 Noon. All Ages, All Levels (under 6 with a parent). Tuition: $23 Member/$30 Non-Member. Parent/Child: $26 Member/$36 Non-Member.

Adult Clay Studio with instructor Sally Brown
Work with the wheel and hand building. Whether you are a beginner or looking for some studio time, this class is for you. We will cover the basics of preparing work for firing and glazing in a fun, relaxed environment. A material fee for clay, glazes, and firing is included in the class fee. Sally Brown is certified in silver clay and can teach you how to add embellishments to your clay pieces. There is an extra charge for silver material and firing. Three Tuesdays, December 5-19, 10 AM-12 Noon. Tuition: $60 Member/$80 Non-Member. Four Fridays, December 1-22, 12-2 PM. Tuition: $80 Member/$100 Non-Member.

Basic Picture Framing with instructor Linda Lee
It’s easy to do your own picture framing once you learn how. Quality framing not only enhances your artwork, but protects it and saves you money. Learn what tools and materials are needed and how to use them. Frame an actual piece of artwork from start to finish. Sunday, December 3, 1-4 PM. Tuition: $24 Member/$30 Non-Member. Materials fee: $5 payable to instructor.

Friday Night Tie-Dye with instructor Sue Rutford
This is an opportunity to create those wild & wacky designs you've always wanted to try. Each person can bring up to five items (T-shirts, pair of socks, pants, etc) to dye. Items need to be 100% cotton and pre-washed. Wear old clothes, shoes and bring rubber gloves. Friday, December 8, 7-9 PM. Age/Level: Adults, Teens, Youth 8 and up, All Levels. Tuition: $21 Member/$26 Non-Member. Parent/Child: $31 Member/$40 Non-Member.

Fused Glass & Fine Silver with Lee Parr and Kim Bakken-Parr
This is a three session class combining two art forms. In the first session you will create glass cabochons using glass fusion. In the following two sessions you will set the piece in fine silver. The results will be amazing. Monday, December 4th, 6:30-9 PM; Saturday, December 9th, 9:30 AM-12:00 PM; Saturday, December 16th, 9:30-11:30 AM. Age/Level: Adults, Teens, All Levels.

Oil/Acrylic Painting with instructor Frank Zeller
Oil painting for everyone! This class is offered to anyone from beginner to advanced. We will all start with the basics; color, shape and value. Special techniques of oil painting will be included as they come up in the painting process. Frank Zeller is an extraordinary artist and art educator. Three Tuesdays, December 5-19, 9 AM-12 Noon. Tuition: $48 Member/$60 Non-Member.

Drawing Techniques with instructor Mary Pearson
Each week will be a new drawing subject from still life’s, photos and a live model. We will concentrate on creating interesting compositions, using perspective, measuring techniques, how to best use photo references, and the importance of value. Call or email for a supply list. Three Mondays, December 4-18, 7-9PM. Tuition: $48 Member/$60 Non-Member.

Exquisite Paper Bowls with instructor Kathy Felsheim
Create stunning paper bowls with amazing strength using paper-mache techniques. These exquisite bowls can be used in your home as decoration or as containers. Many layers of glue and paper harden to give the bowls amazing strength. Three Wednesdays, December 6, 20, & January 3, 6:30-8 PM. Tuition: $50 Member/ $65 Non-Member.

Beginning Watercolor with instructor Mary Pearson
Learn the basics for enjoying this popular medium and paint from a variety of still life subjects. Call or email for a supply list. Four Wednesdays, December 6-27, 7-9 PM. Tuition: $64 Member/$80 Non-Member.

The Perpetual Art Class: All Media, All the Time! with instructor Susan Fryer Voigt
This class incorporates painters of every level in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Learn about color, line, perspective, values, composition, framing and marketing. All water-based media are welcome, or you may use pastels, water-soluble oils or regular oils with an odorless solvent. Advance registration required. Monday, December 11, 9:30 AM-12 Noon. Tuition: $30 Member/$38 Non-Member.

Tuesday Evening Clay with instructor Sue Kapsner
This informal studio offers beginners and intermediate students a variety of techniques to work with clay at their own pace. This includes handbuilding, wheel work and glazing techniques. Advanced students can work independently with support from the instructor as needed. Class size is limited to 8 students per session to guarantee individual attention. A material fee for clay, glazes and firing is included in the weekly fee. Additional clay may be purchased. Three Tuesdays, December 5-19, 7-9 PM. Tuition: $60 Member/$75 Non-Member.

PRESCHOOL & YOUTH

Star Books with instructor Sue Rutford
These intriguing books can be made in a variety of sizes—once you know the tricks, you’ll want to make lots! We’ll even make a tiny star book that can transform into an ornament. Sue will provide all the materials necessary to create covers using beautiful decorative papers, inside pages that can be plain or colorful, and an assortment of stamps, pens, and markers to get you started writing and drawing in your books. Saturday, December 2, 2-3:30 PM. Tuition: $15 Member/$20 Non-Member. Age/Level: Adults, youth, and children (under 8 with a parent).

Preschool Art Fun with instructor Kyle Frederickson
This class is a great way for preschoolers and an adult to share creative time and have fun together. Experience cutting, coloring, paint, glue and lots of fun activities in this fast-paced class. Dress for mess! 10 Thursdays, December 7–February 22, 1-2 PM. (No class December 28 or January 4). Age/Level: preschoolers and a grownup. Tuition: $110 Member/$130 Non-Member. Pro-rated fees available for families entering mid-session.

Andy Warhol Printmaking with instructor Cassandra Monson
Study Andy Warhol, the artist who designed the Campbell soup label. Learn how to make a simple printmaking plate and print your image multiple times while having tons of fun! Saturday, December 9, 1-4 PM. Age/Level: Kids of all ages. Tuition: $25 Member/$32 Non-Member.

Egyptian Art with instructor Cassandra Monson
You will study images from King Tutankhamen's Tomb and look at Egyptian sculpture and wall paintings. Make your own plaster mask just like the famous one of King Tut and an Egyptian scarab or beetle using clay. Three days - December 27, 28, 29, 9:30 AM-12 Noon. Age/Level: Kids of all ages. Tuition $75.

Multimedia Drawing with instructor Cassandra Monson
Learn how to draw everyday objects, animals and people. You will experiment with many materials: graphite and colored pencils, charcoal, soft pastels and oil pastels. Three days December 27, 28, 29, 12:30-3 PM. Age/Level: Kids of all ages. Tuition: $75.
