October Art Classes at the White Bear Center for the Arts

–The White Bear Center for the Arts (WBCA) is offering fun and educational art classes in October. All Art Center instructors are experienced professionals in the field they are teaching. Classes are discounted for WBCA members. Visit www.whitebeararts.org and click on “Classes” to see a full listing of youth and adult art classes. Classes scheduled for the month of October:

“Lampworking” Glass Open Studio with Jennifer Wolcott. Sunday, October 1, 12 Noon-3 PM. Bring your own lampworking projects or buy from Jennifer projects you would like to work on. This will be a real person open studio with Jennifer available for guidance as you compare techniques, solve problems and share what you know. Tuition: $35 WBCA Member/$40 Non-Member. Register in advance.

Oil Painting with Bob Straube. 5 Tuesdays, October 3-31, 9 AM to 12 Noon. Oil painting for everyone! Bob will give individual assistance, critiques, and frequent demonstrations. Students may bring photos to work from and share, or follow the instructor’s lead. There will be a demo and discussion of supplies on the first day. Bring your painting supplies if you have them, paint along or watch. Cameras and recording equipment are permitted. Tuition: $80 WBCA Member/$100 Non-Member. Register in advance.

How Pictures Work - The Mechanics of Drawing & Painting with Sydney Wilcox. 5 Wednesdays, October 4- November 1, 4-6 PM. Have you ever thought you did not have art ability and wish you did? This is the class for you. In this class you can learn why you like something or not and what to do about it. This class covers the principles of how to make pictures. Practice and learn the fundamentals of 2 dimensional art making. Skills covered are 1-point perspective, creating deep space and imaginary architecture, value and shading of objects, color blending with colored pencils and watercolor, and collage. Students will learn the tools so they can make what they imagine and manage their expectations of their creativity. It is much easier to be creative when you understand and can easily use the skills needed for art making. Sydney Wilcox has a Masters in Art Education and has taught at various St. Paul area schools. Tuition: $60 WBCA Member/$75 Non-Member

Wheel Basics-101 with Alex Chinn. 4 Thursdays, October 5-26, 7-9 PM. This class is for people with a basic understanding of clay who want to try their hand at a potter’s wheel. We will start with the basics of centering. Thrown forms such as vases, mugs and bowls will be covered. You will learn how to form handles and trim a foot on your work. Come, relax and focus your thoughts on a lump of rotating clay. Tuition: $80 WBCA Member/$100 Non-Member. Register in advance.

Creative Self-Promotion with Britt Aamodt. Saturday, October 7, 1-4 PM. So you’re an artist/writer/musician/creative mind, and you’ve got this great exhibit/book/band/idea you want to share with the world. So, what next? Unless you’re one of the lucky few who have a built in audience, you need to go out there and drum up some attention. This course will focus on techniques you as a creative artist can use to target an audience and get them interested in your work. Students are encouraged to contact the instructor ahead of time to describe his/her project and creative goals. Also, time will be given in class to share problems and ideas and get feedback. Tuition: $25 WBCA Member/$36 Non-Member. Register in advance.

Basic Picture Framing with Linda Lee. Sunday, October 8, 1-4 PM. It’s easy to do your own picture framing once you learn how. Quality framing not only enhances your artwork, but protects it and saves you money. In this class you will learn what tools and materials are needed and how to use them. We will work together to frame and actual piece of artwork from start to finish. Tuition: $24 Member/$30 Non-Member. Materials fee: $5.00. Register in advance.

The Perpetual Art Class: All Media, All the Time! with Susan Fryer Voigt. 2 Mondays, October 9 & 23, 9:30 AM-12:30 PM. This class incorporates painters of every level in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Bring your own project and materials and have Susan’s assistance. She will also demo a technique applicable to all mediums at each session. Learn more about color, line, perspective, values, composition, framing and marketing. All water-based media are welcome, or you may use pastels, water-soluble oils or regular oils with an odorless solvent. This class must be signed up for a week in advance. $60 WBCA Member/$75 Non-Member. Register in advance.

Poetry Slam with Lisa Arnold. Friday, October 13th, 7-9 PM. Poetry slam is a fun night out! After a short history of this art form, we'll listen to some slam poems. Students will be taken through the process of writing a slam poem in a writing workshop and perform their works in progress. Lisa Arnold is a local slam poet who teaches theatre classes at the University of St. Thomas. She also advises the slam poetry team at UST who competed at the national college poetry slam. Tuition: $25 WBCA Member/$35 Non-Member. Register in advance.

Beads of Pure Silver with Kim Bakken-Parr, certified Precious Metal Clay instructor. Saturday, October 14th, 9:30 AM to 12 Noon and Saturday, October 21st, 9:30-11:30 AM. “I MADE IT!!” That’s what you’ll tell your friends when they ask you where you got that great necklace. With Precious Metal Clay and "cork clay" you create beautiful hollow pure silver beads. Each bead is an expression of your artistic vision. The beads will be string on a leather chocker. If you have any special beads at home you would like to incorporate into your design, please bring them to class. Tuition: $40 WBCA Member/ $48 Non-Member. Materials fee: $35 payable to the instructor. Register in advance.

Japanese Style Frog, Crane & Fish Painting with Cassandra Monson. Saturday, October 14, 1-4 PM. Come and learn how to draw and paint frogs, cranes and fish in the Japanese style using watercolors. While our paintings are drying, we will learn how to make origami jumping frogs and other awesome origami art. And you’ll learn a few Japanese words as well! Tuition: $25 WBCA Member/$32 Non-Member

How to Exhibit Photos with Linda Lee. Sunday, October 15, 1-4 PM. Have you always wanted to take that next step with your hobby and actually exhibit you artwork? We will discuss where to exhibit and how to approach potential places of exhibition. We will also cover what to expect from the process and how to prepare your artwork- proper framing, pricing etc. Tuition: $24 WBCA Member/$30 Non-Member. Register in advance.

Spirited Watercolors with Jeanne Larson. October 19, 20 & 21, 9:30 AM-4 PM. This is a fun, "structurally unstructured" 3 day workshop designed to access that fun part of painting that helps us find the zone where we do our best work. You will learn how to use the "zoom feature" in your brain to discover new formats to make your landscapes more riveting and your florals more memorable. Emphasis will be on finding the underlying abstract framework upon which to hang your realistic subjects. Jeanne will also be demonstrating how to add metallic and iridescent watercolors to your work to add subtle nuances and exciting touches to both landscapes and florals. Tuition: $195 WBCA Member/ $234 Non-Member. Register in advance.

Bookmaking with Lin Lacy. October 21, 1-3:30 PM. Students will make an eight section hard cover accordion book. You will learn about paper grain, how to cover book boards and different ways to use your book. We will use archival glue sticks, but I will also demonstrate how to use PVA glue. Lin also teaches bookbinding at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts and has worked on tapestry conservation at the MIA. Tuition: $40 WBCA Members/$48 Non-Member. Materials Fee: $18 includes a bone folder and archival glue stick to keep. Additional materials to make a second book at home can be purchased for $8.00. Register in advance.

Photo Transfer with Lin Lacy. October 28, 9:30 AM-12:30 PM. Students will learn three non-toxic methods for transferring images and photos to paper. One of these methods is permanent on paper, fabric, wood and metal. There is no special equipment needed. The supply fee for this class is $12.00. Lin has a BFA in design from MCAD, and has also studied design in Amsterdam. Tuition: $40 WBCA Member /$48 Non-Member

Fiber Art- Beautiful Felt with Sue Kapsner. Saturday, October 28, 1:30-4 PM. Learn the ancient process of hand felting wool to make a small pouch or wallet. Tuition: $24 WBCA Member/$27 Non-Member. Register in advance.
