Summer Art Classes for Adults

–The White Bear Center for the Arts (WBCA) is offering fun and educational adult summer art classes in August including, painting, drawing, picture framing, clay, mosaics, jewelry and more. All Art Center instructors are experienced professionals in the field they are teaching. Classes are discounted for WBCA members. Beginning Watercolor with Mary Pearson
Location: White Bear Center for the Arts
Four Tuesdays, August 8-29, 6:30 PM-8:30 PM
Adults, All Levels
Fees: $64 WBCA Member/$80 Non-Member
Register in advance.
No experience required; we will learn the basics for enjoying this popular medium. We will paint from a variety of still life subjects. Supply list will be given prior to first class.

Horses in Pastel with Deborah Voyda Rogers
Location: White Bear Center for the Arts
Saturday, August 19, 1-5:00 PM and Sunday, August 20, 1-4:00 PM
Fee: $70 WBCA Member/$85 Non-Member
Register in advance.
Students will learn to draw and compose paintings of a horse. Working from the instructor’s photos, horse anatomy, color, and design will all be covered. Experimentation with shape and supports will be fun and creative. Putting emotion into your painting will be stressed. Being familiar with your subject matter will help you to form a bond with the viewer. Supply List will be given to students prior to class.

Animals in Acrylic with Michaelin Otis
Location: TAMARACK NATURE CENTER
August 12, 9:30-3:30 PM and August 13, 12:30-3:30 PM
Adults, All Levels
Fee: $90 WBCA Member/$108 Non-Member
Register in advance.
Two day workshop painting animals from photographs. Students will learn to create texture with different mediums. Drawing, composition, and painting techniques will be covered. Students will paint from the instructor’s photos, but will learn to choose from their own reference as well. A material list will be provided.

Drawing Techniques with Mary Pearson
Location: White Bear Center for the Arts
August 7-28, 6:30 - 8:30 PM
Adults, Beginners and Beyond
Register in advance.
Fee: $16 WBCA Member/$20 Non-Member per week/per month.
Each week will have a new drawing subject. We will work from still lives, photos and a live model. We will concentrate on creating interesting compositions, using perspective, measuring techniques, how to best use photo references, and the importance of value. A supply list will be provided.

Developing Your Artistic Vision with Linda Lee
Location: White Bear Center for the Arts
Wednesdays, August 23 & 30, 6-9 PM

As you develop your "artistic vision" not only will you shoot better photographs but you will also begin to notice that the world around you becomes more beautiful to your eyes even when you're not taking pictures. This two-part workshop is designed to encourage and assist you in this ever evolving process. Please bring 3 - 5 of your favorite photographs to share with the class. This is a FUN & EDUCATIONAL group process! You will need a camera for this class and you will need to know how to use it. This is not a class on technical instruction concerning the use of your equipment.

How to Exhibit Photos with Linda Lee

Have you always wanted to take that next step with your hobby and actually exhibit your artwork? We will discuss where to exhibit and how to approach potential places of exhibition. We will also cover what to expect from the process and how to prepare your artwork- proper framing, pricing etc.

Basic Picture Framing with Linda Lee

It’s easy to do your own picture framing once you learn how. Quality framing not only enhances your artwork, but protects it as well. Save money while beautifying you’re environment and expressing your creativity. Framed artwork is also a great gift idea! In this class you will learn what tools and materials are needed and how to use them. We will work together to frame and actual piece of artwork from start to finish. Materials fee $5.00.

Hand Building Basics–101 with Alex Chinn
Location: White Bear Center for the Arts
Five Thursdays, August 3-31, 7-9:00 PM
Adults, Beginning
Fee: $100 WBCA Member/$125 Non –Member

This class is for beginners! We will start with the basics of wedging and work our way through the final glaze firing. You will learn how each step is an important part of the final work. This class will cover the basic hand building techniques: pinch, coil, and slab construction (no wheel work). You will use and become familiar with the slab roller and extruder. Come and have fun getting your hands dirty.

Mosaics with Sally Brown
Location: White Bear Center for the Arts
August 11, 7-9:00 PM and August 12, 11-1:00 PM
Adults, All Levels
Fee: $35 WBCA Member/$46 Non-Member

Mosaics date back to 4,000 BC in the ancient city of Ouruk! Join Sally Brown for this opportunity to create a modern day mosaic. Bring an item to embellish—almost anything will do; a mirror, picture frame, or tray. We will design and create on the first day, then grout and finish the project on the second day.

This class allows you to make that piece of silver jewelry you always wanted. Let your imagination create a one of a kind, fine piece of silver jewelry. This class is so fun and the results are amazing. The silver has a higher silver content than sterling silver.

Advanced Tie Dye with Sue Rutford
Location: White Bear Center for the Arts
Sunday, August 13, 2-4:00 PM
All Ages, Prerequisite Tie Dye class
Fee: $17 WBCA Member/$21 Non-Member
Parent/Child Fee: $30 WBCA Member/$40 Non-Member
Register in advance.
Advanced techniques include stitching, fancy folds, dishpan dyeing, banding, and more! Again, bring your 100% cotton, rayon, or silk items or fabric, rubber gloves, and a dishpan. Remember to wear old clothes.
