Cool Summer Art Classes for Kids and Teens

– Take a break from the heat this summer with cool art classes for kids and teens. The White Bear Center for the Arts (WBCA) is offering fun and educational classes in creative writing, storytelling, clay, printmaking, mosaics, painting, jewelry making, and much, much more! All Art Center instructors are experienced professionals in the field they are teaching. Classes are discounted for WBCA members. It pays to become a member! Make outrageous, wearable art with everyday items...tickets, newspaper, envelopes, plastic cups-the possibilities are endless! Bring your ideas and a few items you would like to transform into a hat, a dress, a belt... The last day of class we’ll have a fashion show!

CLAY MASKS AND ANIMALS

Come play with clay in sculptural form and learn a variety of handbuilding techniques. We will create 3-D masks, folded animal sculptures and free standing sculpture.

PORTRAIT PAINTING

Sketch and paint a realistic or funky portrait of yourself or someone you know. We will learn how to paint on real canvas. Bring a photo of a face you want to draw.

WHO AM I?
WRITING WORKSHOP with JOHN CADDY

“ Who Am I?” is the eternal human question. Never is the question asked more often than by people who are rapidly changing without much say in the matter, in other words, by teens. Students will create a variety of self-portraits in poem form, and share them with the group as they are willing. No one will be required to share. Biographical notes: John Caddy is a poet and naturalist whose books include Morning Earth: Field Notes in Poetry, Eating the Sting, and The Color of Mesabi Bones. A Bush Artist Fellow, John’s honors include the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, the Minnesota Book Award, and the Sally Award for teaching arts. He has taught poetry in many venues for 35 years.

DIGITAL STORYTELLING

Lights, Camera, Action! Digital Storytelling will be a 3-day class that teaches young people how to use media arts tools to tell stories. Students will use digital video cameras, still picture cameras and computer editing software to put together group projects, which they will take home on DVD.

LAKESIDE WATERCOLOR

We will explore nature on sight as we bring paints, paper and pencils with us to the shores of White Bear Lake. We will learn to see with the artist’s eye and create exciting paintings. In case the weather isn’t great, we will be doing our watercolors indoors at the Art Center.

MESSY MOSAICS!

Turn that beautiful dish you broke into a work of art. We have a variety of shapes to work with! The first day we will plan our design and glue it. The second day we will mix, color and apply grout. All materials are provided, but bring that broken dish if you wish!

IMAGINARY WORLDS

The art and craft of baskets is over 10,000 years old! People used natural materials in the areas where they lived. Our baskets will be made from man-made and natural materials. These baskets are beautiful and fun to make!

WILD CHILD PICTURE FRAMES!

PRINTMAKING POTPOURRI

In this class you will learn about printmaking techniques and printmakers from history, then make prints of your own. We will create relief plates, line-prints and monotype prints, as various techniques yield various results.
