July Art Classes for Adults

White Bear Lake, MN –The White Bear Center for the Arts (WBCA) offers fun and educational adult (age 16+) summer art classes, including painting, drawing, clay, mosaics, photography, framing, glass, jewelry making, collage, needlework, basketry, tie dye, creative writing and much, much more! All Art Center instructors are experienced professionals in the field they are teaching.
Classes are discounted for WBCA members. Advanced registration is required.

This is an opportunity to create those wild & wacky designs you've always wanted to try. Each person can bring up to five items (T-shirts, pair of socks, pants, etc) to dye. Items need to be 100% cotton and pre-washed. Wear old clothes, shoes and bring rubber gloves. A material fee is included in the class fee.
Introduction to SoulCollage® with Diana Meier

Working with the language of symbols, dreams and archetypes, create your own personalized deck of collaged cards using images you select intuitively. SoulCollage® is a deeply satisfying art that anyone can do. The workshop provides an introduction to the four suits in a SoulCollage® deck, a period of guided visualization, time for hands-on card making, and then participants will
learn to speak from their own cards. This process enables the card-maker to know the deeper, personal meaning behind their creations.
Earth Gifts: Poems of Celebration with John Caddy

This class is for those who cherish wild nature and its healing power, and for those who need an antidote to environmental despair. We will write poems from direct Earth experience that celebrate her gifts. We will write poems that are clear, simple, and accurate. Students will bring copies of their poems for gentle workshopping. Glass Fusion & Fine Silver with Lee Parr & Kim Bakken-Parr

This is a three session class combining two art forms. In the first session you will create glass cabochons using glass fusion. In the following two sessions you will set the piece in fine silver. The results will be amazing. Material Fee: $40 payable to instructor.

Learn how to cut, grind, and fuse glass for beautiful, unique jewelry. You will learn about different kinds of glass and how to integrate fused work into a beaded necklace. Includes materials for fused piece, but students should bring their own beads the 2nd week to finish the necklace.

Learn the basics of Swedish Hardanger, a traditional form of cutwork needlework on a simple doily of very good quality linen. You will learn klosterbars, weaving, and buttonhole cutting. Bring a good, sharp pointed scissors. The teachers will supply all kits, instructions and extra patterns.
Willow Vase with Cynthia Stuck

Ever wonder why willow has been used to make baskets for hundreds of years? One reason is that it's a native plant in North America and Europe. You'll see how easy it is to weave with willow when you make this small vase to hold a collection of dried flowers and grasses. All materials and tools will be provided.

Learn how to turn an ordinary leaf into a beautiful piece of silver jewelry. Leaves from trees, bushes and even house plants will be used.
“Lampworking” Glass With Jennifer Wolcott
July 22, 29 & August 5, 1:00-4:00 PM (3 sessions)

Early glass beadmakers used oil lamps as their heat source for melting glass rods-hence the term “lampwork”. In this series of classes, students will learn how to safely work glass rods into beautiful beads using a small torch. Jennifer also teaches at the Glass Garden in Northfield, MN. Material fees: There will be a $30 torch kit rental and $25 material fee.
Silversmithing with Jennifer Wolcott
Saturdays, July 22, 29 & August 5, 9:30 AM-12:30 PM (3 sessions)
Adult, Teen, Beginner and Beyond
Fee: $85 WBCA Member/$100 Non-Member
Advanced registration required.
Material fee: $25 payable to instructor (Larger projects may require additional fee)
Learn the basic skills of silversmithing! The emphasis will be on basic techniques. Each student will choose their own project. Projects are based on learning how to set an object such as fused glass, stones or gems as part of a pin, pendant, button, earrings, or a ring. Bring a cabochon to set. Tools will be provided for use during class.
