Spring 2006

"There are always flowers for those who wish to see them."

–Henri Matisse

It won’t be long and spring flowers will be breaking through the cold dirt. In the meantime, our classes are filled with people who see flowers all year. Practicing a familiar art or learning a new one, stimulates the imagination and brain in vital ways. We have so many new opportunities this spring waiting for you at the White Bear Center for the Arts!

First off, the 33rd annual Northern Lights Fine Art Exhibition opens at Century College on March 6th. The reception will be held Friday, March 17th 5:30-8:00 PM. The reception is free and open to the public, so come join us as we celebrate this year’s show and honor the award winning entries with a
presentation by the judges. Refreshments and music will also be enjoyed!

WBCA, in partnership with Tamarack Nature Center, is hosting another Iron Pour on Earth Day, April 22nd at Tamarack Nature Center. This pour will involve two furnaces and is a fantastic opportunity to observe or participate in the foundry experience. We are offering workshops in 3-D sculpture and again, the simpler iron tile casting. Spaces are very limited so don’t wait to sign up if you are interested in these unique offerings. Details are to the right. Also note the two fantastic Art Talks scheduled in March with Frank Heidelberg and Professor Bill Donovan.

Mark your calendars for May 20th as we host Open Canvas, 2006 downtown White Bear Lake! We will have over 40 artists participating in making art, shoulder to shoulder for this fabulous evening, with Mike Judy as our Honorary Chair Artist. Guests will have the opportunity to watch the artists and bid on pieces through a silent auction. Open Canvas is our most important fundraising event of the year, and so much fun you don’t want to miss it! This event sold out last year, so watch for
invites in April when tickets go on sale.

The annual High School Writer’s Contest Awards’ night is scheduled for May 9th , at White Bear High School, South Campus. Are you in a bookclub? Last year more than half our awards were sponsored by local bookclubs. Why not consider sponsoring this valuable youth event with a group donation, and attend the awards to hear young authors read their winning entries? You will be inspired by the brave and important words of our young people while supporting our authors of tomorrow.

There’s so much more to highlight with new classes, a new website, new board members, and new faces around the WBCA. Please stop by the office and let us know who you are. We’re located on the top floor of the Armory building, downtown White Bear Lake. If you’re not a member yet, we’ll be sure to help you get signed up and fitted with a class that’s just right for you! And with all that’s going on around here, we have lots of opportunities to volunteer. So drop in, give us a call, or visit our snazzy new website at www.whitebeararts.org. We think you’ll like it!

Flower power!
