Arts Center Turns Up The Heat (Again)
By Catherine Carey | May/June 2006 issue Town Life Magazine
White Bear Center for the
Arts (WBCA) is buzzing
with energy these days.
New directors have been chosen;
new personnel is on board; spring
events are underway; and a new web
site is ready to rock.
It doesn’t get any better than this.
WBCA was originally formed in
1968 as the White Bear Arts Council
by residents who shared a passion for
the arts and wanted to see them fostered
in the community.
In 1996, upon acquiring some space
in the White Bear Lake Armory, the
organization changed its name to
White Bear Center for the Arts.
Its mission is “to build creative and
culturally rich communities in the
White Bear area by providing art
experiences for children, adults and
families.”
The Arts Center fulfills its mission, in
part, by offering more than 240 art
classes each year. In the coming
months, it will also sponsor the following
events:
•
Northern Lights Fine Art
Exhibit, March 6 to April 7,
Century College, Theatre Lobby,
West Campus, 3300 Century
Ave., White Bear Lake.
WBCA and Century College are
teaming up to sponsor the 33rd
annual Northern Lights Fine Art
Exhibit. A reception will be held
5:30 to 8 p.m., Fri., March 17. The
reception is free and open to the
public. Come meet the judges and
enjoy refreshments and live music.
•
Iron Pour on Earth Day, Sat.,
April 22, Tamarack Nature
Center, 5287 Otter Lake Road,
White Bear Township. WBCA
and Tamarack Nature Center are
hosting this popular event. The Iron
Pour will feature two furnaces and
an opportunity to observe or participate
in the foundry experience.
Workshops will be offered in 3-D
sculpture and simpler iron tile casting.
Space is limited so make your
reservation as soon as possible.
•
High School Writers’ Contest
Awards, Tues., May 9, White
Bear Lake Area High School,
South Campus. Two hundred students
are expected to compete in
four categories: poetry, short story,
one-act play and essay. Contest rules
and entry forms can be found on
WBCA’s web site. Deadline is March
10.
•
Open Canvas, 6 to 10 p.m., Sat.,
May 20, White Bear Lake
Armory. Open Canvas is WBCA’s
biggest fundraiser of the year. Forty
artists paint original works of art
while patrons watch, eat, drink and
talk. A silent auction is held at the
end of the evening so you can bid on
your favorite piece and take it home
with you that night. This event sold
out quickly last year so do not hesitate
to call for reservations.
For more information on these
events, visit www.whitebeararts.org or call 651•407•0597.
