Arts center honors students' literary talents

White Bear Center for the Arts held an award ceremony for its annual high school writing contest on May 10.

Altogether, 175 pieces were entered by students at Mahtomedi, White Bear Lake North Campus and White Bear Lake South Campus. The judges reviewed 128 poems, 23 short stories, 17 essays and 5 one-act plays.

Kaitlin Muth, Andrew Bloomberg and Jennifer Scanlan received Awards of Excellence for their poems, titled "Three Negroes Lynched in Duluth Last Night," "The Ballad of Billy Jones" and "Bubble," respectively. The following students received Awards of Merit and Honorable Mentions for their poetry: Beth Kuker, Madeline Jungbauer, Benton Uttley, Sam Matthews, Kristy Williams, Shannon Heidican, Mike Skunes, Lindsay Jans and Claire Humes.

Awards of Excellence for short stories were given to Joey Franklin for "Short Story Contest," Jacola Roman for "Instinct," Breanna Fellows for "Going Away" and Alison Keleher for "I Promised, Luv." Awards of Merit and Honorable Mentions were given to Nathan Pederson, Siri Bloom, Katie Hanson, Elliott Malcolm, Jenna Lindesse, Alexandra Tansom, Melissa Checky, Brianna Branham, Janelle Gergen and Lindsey Kahn.

Lindsey Kahn and Alex Bergstrom received Awards of Excellence for their essays, "My Safe Haven" and "Nuclear Disarmament: Our Nation's Responsibility." Awards of Merit and Honorable Mentions were given to Kelsey Johnson, Joe Souder, Sara Ryan and Kate Nussbaum.

An Award of Excellence was given to Matthew Gerber for his one-act play "Private Eye Q and the Kleenex Conspiracy." Jenna Lindeke received an Award of Merit.
