Class capacity is limited and classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Early registration helps us reduce class cancellations. Late registrations will be taken if space permits - it never hurts to call us. Confirmations are not sent to students. If a class must be canceled, a full refund will be issued. Register here.

I101 Clay Workshop

Description: Learn the secrets of getting clay to mold to your ideas. Students will learn many handbuilding techniques they can use to form sculpture, vessels or wall art. Students with previous experience can learn new techniques.

Japanese Art: Calligraphy, Culture and Collage
Students will learn 3 different types of Japanese art:
I102 Calligraphy
Instructor: Aki Shibata
Students will practice Japanese calligraphy with real Japanese characters learning about pictographs on which Japanese characters are based. Then students will choose one object to create their own character and sketch the object. After sketching they will create their own unique character.

Come explore the animal paintings and sculptures of our ancestors! Students will learn about the ancient artwork of Europe, Australia, Asia and the Americas. Throughout the three-day class students will make masks, sculptures, drawings and paintings. Students will learn how to create realistic and abstract animals. Come all day or just for half. I518 Stepping Stone Theatre CREATE A PLAY: Fractured Fairytales Mishaps, Mayhem, and Mischief Abound!
The pigs are in the castle! The Little Red Hen is running with the big bad wolf! Seven Dwarfs are climbing up Rapunzel’s hair!!! This class will examine our old time favorite fairytales, and explore ways to twist and turn them into our own updated fairytales. Working closely with a SteppingStone Artist, students will create a short play to perform for friends and family on the last
day of class. Students will empower themselves as they learn to create characters through improvisation and frozen pictures. The class will focus on building an ensemble as students learn what it takes to put on a show.

Illustrator's Creature Series

I519 "Drawing on the Wild Side" - students will look at the Illustrations of Maurice Sendak in his book "Where the Wild Things Are" and create their own Wild Thing using Crayon and Watercolor.

I628 CREATE A PLAY: Whodunit?!
Instructor: SteppingStone Theatre
Calling all detectives! Grab your magnifying glass and fingerprint powder. Come solve the mystery. Follow the clues and find the missing pieces. Working closely with a SteppingStone Artist, students will create a short play to perform for friends and family on the last day of class. Students will empower themselves as they learn to create characters through improvisation and frozen pictures.
The class will focus on building an ensemble as students learn what it takes to put on a show.

1633 Writing Workshop
Instructor: Michael Blumer
Author Michael Blumer will help the students think up a world of their own, do some basic mapping, name some of the features, talk about what kinds of animals and plants would be there, and maybe make up some wacky creatures like I have - the hippograff which is a dwarf hippo with dragonfly wings that eats broccoli which ferments in its stomach to make gas to help it float and
fly. The students will record their creations in a journal which they can use as a basis for writing stories of adventures in their world. A great activity for parents to attend with their children. Start world building and story telling in the workshop. Continue at home.

I734 CREATE A PLAY: S.H.A.B.A.M Super Heros Against Big Angry Meanies!

The local chapter of Super Heros for Good, have united to rid the world of rudeness, bullying, and to promote goodness throughout the land! Students will create exciting and zany characters and bring them to life through stories and exercises with an emphasis on FUN! A great way to channel energies and develop imagination. Students will perform their play on the last day of class.

Instructor: Heidi Nelson Come and explore the awesomely fluid, sparklingly transparent watercolor medium. Build your creativity through drama games that lead in to art projects. We will work with real artist paints, called by true pigment names, so students become familiar with the characteristics of some common pigments. We will work on real watercolor paper, because the way it holds
water is crucial to watercolor painting.

1837 Nature Collage Painting and Sun Prints
Instructor: Amanda Olson
In this project, students will create a painting based on the colors, patterns and textures that are found in nature. The student will create an abstract painting that is interesting, but also will learn important elements of design and nature and how they can work together to produce a beautiful piece of art. Students plan to walk outside to collect items and bring a magnifying glass.
The same objects will also be used to make a cyanotype print. This will be a non toxic print that will be developed with sun and water.

I840 Animal Relief Sculpture

Students learn how simple shapes make up an animal, and how to make a low relief sculpture with recycled cardboard, and paper mache.
Watercolor paint and colored pencils will make these sculptures ready to hang.

I841 Chinese Watercolor Technique (Cone Flower Floral)

In this one day class students will learn Chinese watercolor technique by painting a simple floral of a yellow cone flower, using the tip and body of a brush. Students will love the elegant simplicity of the one stroke petals and learning how to make a cone look fuzzy.
